The Spine Education and Research Institute has been participating in research studies since 2002.  SERI has been a part of 10 different studies to date.  Besides the patient, there are two integral parts of a clinical research team:  the Principal Investigator and the Clinical Research Coordinator.

The Role of the Principal Investigator (PI)
The Principal Investigator is charged to conduct objective research that generates independent, high quality, and reproducible results.  The PI is responsible for the management and integrity of the design, conduct, and reporting of the research project and for managing, monitoring, and ensuring the integrity of any collaborative relationships.  Additionally, the PI is responsible for the direction and oversight of compliance, financial, personnel, and other related aspects of the research project and for coordination with the department, and central administration personnel to assure research is conducted in accordance with Federal regulations and sponsoring agency policies and procedures.

The Role of the Clinical Research Coordinator (CRC)
The Clinical Research Coordinator (CRC) comprises an integral part of the research team.  Working under the PI, he/she is responsible for conducting the study in accordance with federal and hospital regulations.  Depending on departmental organization, the CRC may also have responsibility for budget negotiation, monthly invoicing, account management, and regulatory paperwork.
